Since the 16th century, theatres as status symbols

It must be said that a good theatre tradition has existed in the Marche since the 16th century. This matured in quality between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with numerous theatres facilities built. Theatres were a status symbol for thesociety of the time, as they increasingly became a place to meet, not only for the aristocracy and emerging classes, but for everyone.

In order to extend to all citizens something that had, until then, been the exclusive prerogative of the wealthiest, as performances were often held in spaces they owned, Fermo had a small structure in the Sala Grande of Palazzo dei Priori, under the communal theatre formula, but in the late 18th century the city began to consider the need to build a theatre with a suitable architectural structure.
