The birth of archaeological collecting

The Archaeological museum of Fermo originates from the private museum of the brothers Gaetano and Raffaele De Minicis, born in nearby Falerone at the end of the eighteenth century and lived in Fermo in the first half of the nineteenth century. The De Minicis museum, in its eclectic taste and passion for the ancient, has its roots partly in the eighteenth-century tradition of the wunderkammers or wonder rooms, partly in the neoclassical cult of the ancient of which Winckelmann was the greatest theorist and of which illustrious exponents were the Italian Scipione Maffei and the German Athanasius Kircher.
